Tiger Leaping Gorge is one of the deepest gorges on earth. Situated on the north flank of Yulong Xueshan (Jade Dragon Snow Mountain) with easy access from Ligiang, TLG is a very popular destination for Chinese tours. Here the Yangtze River roars into a narrow chasm with all the force a mighty river can muster to make a breaktaking sight. These tours all take a "low route" that is basically a road that follows the river elevation to strategic viewing sites. However, for the adventurous, there is a "high route" on the Haba Mountain side that climbs to over 1000 m above the river and offers a full view of the gorge, Haba Mountain and Jade Dragon Snow Mountain (Yulong Xueshan), its two magnificent mountain sides, before descending back down to the river about 19 km beyond the tour bus stops (30 km from Qiaotou trail head). A good two day hike all the way from Qiaotou to Daju, it is mostly used by westerners, with guest/rest houses along the route and several options to shorten or extend the route depending on your appetite and time constraints.
