LOCATION: YangShuo, Guilin, China
NAME: GuDong Waterfalls Area
ENTRY COST: included in tour package
RATING: 3 *
1 – Avoid, 2 – OK if nothing better to do, 3 – Worth seeing, 4 – Worth special trip, 5 – DO NOT MISS!
DESCRIPTION: As you can imagine with all the hills and rivers and the subtropical climate, there might be a lot of waterfalls in the area. GuDong is a park that showcases waterfalls by featuring a hike up through the hills along side a series of falls.
For the adventurous, a good portion of these can be scaled going up while getting a good soaking. As it was cold the day of my visit, this was not an option but looked like it would be fun.
The visit starts off with a raft ride to the base of the first falls. On the top there is a long rope bridge over a 120 m chasm to begin your way back down. At the end a horse drawn cart transports you back to the visitor area. A play area of local childrens gadgets is a nice diversion for a group of people to laugh at themselves and a restaurant serving lunch was not too bad.
OTHER COMMENTS: * A major activity at this park is walking up the waterfalls in reed sandals. This is a warm/hot day activity as you will get soaked! Without this available, the rating would be 2.
One vendor was selling various medicinal grade shots of mijiu made from everything from dead snakes to weeds. Only for the most adventurous.
